Deciding on your major is a very important decision that you must make very carefully because believe it or not it is a great way to depict the level of success you’re going to have in life. Those who choose an unpopular major don’t always end up getting hired and making lots of money, but staying away from the popular Psychology, Communications, and/or History majors is definitely a smart choice. Let’s take a look at some majors that have excellent job outlooks for this year.
Petroleum Engineering – This major is receiving lots of attention because it not only has one of the best job outlooks, but it pays extremely well too. Right now the median salary is above $100,000. Anytime the median is above six-figures you know it’s a fantastic field to get into. Right now if you receive a degree in petroleum engineering and go to find work you’ll be expected to travel. That’s really the only catch that comes with a petroleum engineering degree – if you’re not willing to travel then you are deemed pretty much useless.
Actuarial Science – If you don’t mind crunching numbers and making calculations then a degree in actuarial science is definitely the route I would suggest you take. Actuaries are hired everywhere for their ability to calculate risk factors when it comes to things like finances and insurance. Actuaries are basically elite advisers who know how to handle numbers. As an actuary you can be expected to be hired almost immediately out of school as those with a degree in actuarial science virtually never settle for unemployment.
Geology and Earth Science – While those with a degree in geology and earth science aren’t expected to make as much as petroleum engineers, their line of work crosses paths very often. A lot of times petroleum engineers will actually work side-by-side and communicate with geologists to get a better understanding of the Earth and the location they’re in before they start digging. You can pretty much count on any degree dealing with oil, the Earth, or mining is going to have a great job outlook.
Pharmaceutical Sciences – When it comes to science majors, none can top pharmaceutical sciences. Expect to be hired right out of school and be making a top-notch salary that can compete with most other fields’ high end salaries. Although this line of work is very demanding, the job outlook is fantastic as more and more focus is being set towards safety and drugs.
Nuclear Engineering – Who wouldn’t want to say they’re a nuclear engineer? Who knows where you’ll end up with a major like this, but the fact that the job outlook is high and the unemployment percent is extremely low is fantastic. The median is right underneath six-figures which is still nice, but the fact that it’s a very interesting area and not a very popular major is promising for sure.
